Believe me when I say it's taken literal years of trials and tribulations to find the best curl cream for my hair type. It's been quite the journey so far, and if you're on the same page, don't lose hope just yet. Thanks to reading tons (and I mean tons) of online reviews and dropping money on every kind of hair product out there — I'm talking curl cream for frizzy hair, curl cream for humidity, and curl defining products, among other things — I can confidently say I've found a solid lineup of products that hydrate, tame, and style my head of curls without weighing them down.

You may be on the hunt for a curl cream because you've tried mousses, gels, and leave-in conditioners, or you may be wondering what the difference between all of these is. We tapped the experts to answer just that and share all the best practices and techniques for styling hair with curl creams. Brad Mondo, professional hairstylist and founder of XMONDO Hair, and Nikkia Nelson, professional hairstylist and owner of Pressed Natural Hair Care Salon, gave Seventeen their recommendations for finding the perfect curl cream for your hair.

Our Top Picks

Is curl cream the same as leave-in conditioner?

"Curl cream is not the same as a leave-in conditioner. Curl creams are designed specifically to aid in the formation of curls," Nelson says. But many curl creams do offer added moisture. "A curl cream is usually a combination of a leave-in conditioner and a curl-defining product with hold," Mondo, who you may recognize from his popular and helpful "Hairdresser Reacts" YouTube videos, adds. "This helps hydrate, define, and defrizz your curls, rather than just hydrate like a leave-in conditioner."

Think of curl creams as the best of both worlds, offering hydration and hold. "Curl creams are designed to hydrate and define curls. Curly hair tends to be on the drier side and curls need moisture in order to form properly, otherwise, they will be frizzy and undefined," says Mondo. "Curl creams are typically packed with hydrating ingredients and oils to moisturize hair and tame frizz. There tends to be less hold in a curl cream than other products because the [curl pattern in your hair] exists, but needs more hydration to form properly."

While curl creams do help to moisturize hair, you can use them in conjunction with leave-in conditioner. "It’s never a bad idea to add a leave-in to your hair prior to using a curl cream," according to Nelson.

What is the difference between curl cream and mousse?

According to Mondo, mousse is designed more for enhancing and defining waves and curls, whereas curl cream focuses more on hydrating and taming frizz. "A mousse typically does not have many hydrating ingredients in it so that it can provide more body and hold for someone trying to enhance their wave pattern," Mondo explains.

What is the difference between curl cream and gel?

"Curl creams are a little more related to conditioners as opposed to gels," Nelson says. While both gels and curl creams define waves and curls, the big difference between the two products is what they do to the texture of your hair. "Heavier hold gels will maintain a style for longer, but can produce stiffer results that need to be broken up or shaken out to feel softer. They can also be used with a curl cream for maximum results," Mondo says, specifying that the choice comes down to your preference on whether you want your hair to be stiff or soft.

Do you use curl cream on wet or dry hair?

Both Mondo and Nelson recommend applying curl creams to wet hair for best results. "You always want to use your curl cream on wet or damp hair. That's when the products work the best," Nelson explains.

Using curl cream on wet hair will also minimize frizz and better hold your style. "As hair dries, the style sets, so it is more difficult to produce the results you want once the hair is dry,” Monday says, adding, “You can use curl cream on second-day hair to tame frizz and add definition, but you want to make sure it does not have too much hold or your hair will be stiff.” Nelson recommends only using a curl cream two to three times a week to avoid product buildup.
